Electrical Superintendent (Engineer)
Job Description:
Role Purpose
The Electrical Superintendent (Engineer) is responsible for leading, maintaining, and optimizing all electrical systems and infrastructure at the zinc mining operation. The role ensures safe, reliable, and compliant electrical supply and equipment availability to support mining, processing, and site services while meeting legal, safety, and production requirements.
Key Responsibilities
Electrical Engineering & Operations
- Manage and maintain all site electrical systems including:
- HV and LV distribution networks
- Substations, transformers, switchgear, and protection systems
- Mobile and fixed plant electrical installations
- Plant, shaft, and surface electrical infrastructure
- Ensure electrical systems are designed, installed, and maintained to statutory and company standards.
- Provide technical authority and sign‑off for electrical modifications and installations.
Safety, Health & Environmental Compliance
- Ensure full compliance with Mine Health & Safety legislation, electrical regulations, and site standards.
- Act as the Responsible Electrical Engineer / Appointed Competent Person where legally required.
- Lead electrical risk assessments, lock‑out procedures, and incident investigations.
- Promote a strong safety culture and zero‑harm mindset within the electrical team.
Maintenance & Reliability Management
- Develop and implement preventative and predictive maintenance strategies.
- Ensure maximum equipment availability and minimize unplanned outages.
- Analyse electrical failures and implement corrective and improvement actions.
- Coordinate shutdowns and major electrical work with production and engineering teams.
Leadership & People Management
- Lead, coach, and manage electricians, technicians, and electrical supervisors.
- Ensure workforce competence, statutory certifications, and skills development.
- Manage performance, discipline, and succession planning within the electrical department.
- Promote teamwork, accountability, and continuous improvement.
Projects & Capital Works
- Lead or support electrical capital and improvement projects.
- Manage contractors and consultants, ensuring safety, quality, and cost control.
- Review and approve electrical drawings, specifications, and commissioning plans.
- Support power supply upgrades, automation, and energy efficiency initiatives.
Budget & Cost Control
- Prepare and manage the electrical maintenance and capital budgets.
- Control electrical consumables, spares, and contractor costs.
- Ensure cost‑effective solutions without compromising safety or reliability.
- Contribute to asset life‑cycle and replacement planning.
Energy & Power Management
- Monitor and optimize power consumption and demand.
- Support energy efficiency and sustainability initiatives.
- Interface with power utilities and suppliers as required.
- Ensure electrical systems support production expansion and life‑of‑mine plans.
Reporting & Governance
- Prepare and present electrical performance reports and KPIs.
- Maintain statutory records, drawings, test results, and registers.
- Participate in internal and external audits and regulatory inspections.
- Ensure document control aligns with legal and company requirements.
Qualifications & Experience
- Degree or Diploma in Electrical Engineering.
- Government Certificate of Competency (GCC – Electrical / Mines) or equivalent, where required.
- 8–10 years post‑qualification experience, with at least 5 years in mining or heavy industrial environments.
- Strong experience with HV/LV systems and mine electrical infrastructure.
- Thorough knowledge of mine electrical safety and compliance requirements.
Desirable
- Experience in zinc or base‑metal mining operations.
- Exposure to underground mining electrical systems (shafts, winders, conveyance).
- Experience with automation, PLCs, and condition‑monitoring systems.
